The Rascal bass comes back with guts
What a surprise! Squier has just added a new bass, the Rascal HH, in the Paranormal series, a line of daring and inspiring designs where creative feels like home!
The original Fender Rascal Bass was a remixed version of the Fender Bass VI by the Custom Shop and made in Mexico. The main difference are the three lipsticks pickups are replaced by two splittable Wide-Range pickups similar to the one you can find on the Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Bass from 2013.
The tone personality is going from a 60's to a loud 70's sound typical from the EB-0 by Gibson. This Chinese-made bass is still a short scale, which is a reference to the Mustang bass family (confirmed by the Mustang/Guild Starfire bridge).
The headstock comes from the Coronado series, which is kind of cool and vintage.
Speaking of Guild Starfire (Guild is owned by Fender since 1995), this bass seems to share many common influences : the green color you can find on the Surfliner guitars by Guild, and the humbuckers and the toggle switch)
In a nutshell, this bass could be a Neo-retro instrument rediscovered by famous short-scale bass players like Paul McCartney, Jack Bruce (Cream), Bill Wyman (Rolling Stones), Andy Fraser (Free), Glenn Cornick (Jethro Tull), Trevor Bolder (Spiders From Mars, Uriah Heep), Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads), Garry Tallent (E Street Band), Bruce Thomas (the Attractions), Gary Mounfield (Stone Roses, Primal Scream), Mike Watt (Minuteman, Firehose, Stooges) and many others.
And to add ice on the cake, a review video by the excellent Low End Lobster :
